Advocacy Collective Asserts to Have Extracted Countless of Music Tracks from Spotify

An activist organization has stated to have scraped millions of songs from Spotify and is getting ready to release them online.

Potential Boost for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts said the apparent data breach could aid artificial intelligence firms searching for data to develop their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million audio tracks from Spotify and 256 million rows of metadata such as performer and record names. The company, which hosts more than 100 million songs, stated that the breach did not constitute its entire catalog.

“We have identified and deactivated the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” stated a Spotify spokesperson.

The Stockholm-based company, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, further explained that an investigation into unauthorised access found a external actor scraped public metadata and used questionable tactics to circumvent DRM protections.

Archive's Declared Goal and Concerns

Spotify does not think the audio taken by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to copyright-infringing books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They asserted the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be distributed via ‘torrents’, a means of exchanging large data files online.

“Of course the service doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a great start,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “preserving humanity’s information and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Battleground

Ed Newton-Rex for defending artists’ rights, said the leaked music would probably be utilized for developing AI models.

“Training on pirated data is unfortunately common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is almost certain to be used instructing AI models,” he stated.

The group's website alludes to a large online archive, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to train its AI models.

A founder of an artificial intelligence company posted on the professional network that individuals of the public could in theory “create their own personal free equivalent of the service”. He said it could also enable technology firms to “train on contemporary music at scale”.

Copyright has become a key issue between creatives, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Responses

In the UK, creative professionals have raised concerns against a ministerial suggestion to let AI companies utilize copyright-protected work without consent unless the owner opts out. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for science, innovation and technology told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, noting that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The administration has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by next year.
