People who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism following their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to address the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the institution and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor abused at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in Canada.

They added the leader was "compassionate" about their own story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach globally.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," they commented.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
